Your Assignment Notebook

Write down all assignments right away!

Listen carefully to what the teacher says.

Know exactly what you are supposed to do.

Study Space

Use same space each time you study

Have a solid flat surface for writing.

Clear off everything else

Good Lighting

Not too bright, not too dim

Chair

Comfortable

One that avoids strain and fatigue

Set at the right height for the table

Eliminate distractions

No radio, TV, telephone, etc.

Don’t accept phone calls

 

Organization

Supplies

Pencils, pens, eraser, Post-Its, paper, index cards, highlighter, calculator, etc.

"Tool box"

Books

All necessary texts & materials

Have a specific place to store all books and corrected papers

Clock

Scheduling

Make a chart.

Break large tasks into smaller sub-tasks.

Prioritize.

Determine amount of time needed for each task.

When will you do it?

Check off when completed.

Scheduling Tips

Plan on studying at the same time each day.

Don’t procrastinate!

Divide reading assignments into even blocks

E.g: Day 1 pp. 1-12

Day 2 pp. 13-25

Day 3 pp. 26-40

20 Minute Miracle

 

Researchers have discovered that the most effective length of time to study is in

20 minute blocks.

Listening Skills

Before Class

Think about what the class is going to be about.

What were the main points covered last class?

Review what your assignment was last class.

During Class

Relate what you have already learned to what is being taught.

Did your homework have anything to do with the subject?

Does your general knowledge provide any additional information?

Concentrate on the subject that is being taught.

Take notes on the main points.

After Class

Review your notes and think about what was covered during class.

Some people like to rewrite their notes.

Some people like to underline or highlight important ideas and vocabulary.

A Good Listener . . .

Pays attention

Tries to hear what is said not what you want to hear

Tries to think "around" the topic and "between the lines"

Listens for essential phrases like, "this is important" and "you will need to know this for the test."
